Props

Props are important for a music video because they are a link between the characters and the narrative. In our music video the most prominent prop is the music box, because it symbolises the love and desperation that the male character experiences to save the ballerina from her incased life and set her free, free to dance again.

Equipment List

Similar to the Costume list and Props List, asset lists help to create a visual list of the items required on the shoot. Looking back on this days before the shoot will ensure we have the desired equipment in order to film out footage. It also prevents forgetting items on the day.

Image and Genre

Costume List

This is the costume list for our project. It makes a visual plan of the items of clothing required to create the look of the character piece by piece. Making this list ensures that nothing is forgotten on the shoot and everything is organised.

Three Kings Down - My Air (Anamatic)

Creating an anamatic has enabled me to determine if I have enough shots to fill the desired time of 3 minutes. It also enables me to time the shots to the beat of the music to make sure the narrative flows. I have also used the different sections of song as my point of scene change/to place a major event. The animatic is also helpful in visualising what the music video will roughly look like but using photos instead of footage.
In creating this anamatic, I found that I had gaps in my idea in which i had to fill. If i had not created this amamatic, i would never have discovered the missing shots, therefore I would have gone straight into filming and has seconds of the music video empty with no correlating footage.

Recreation of a digipack

This is my recreation of 'Submarine's' soundtrack by Alex Turner for the film Submarine.
Recreating this digi-pack helped me to gain experience in Photoshop skills in preparation for creating our real digi-pack for our project and band.

- The story is told through a magazine, it is told in a linear story about a relationship.
- Explaining story, images like the images in her head - magazine uses motion and comes to life.
- Fashion magazine, teen girls magazine in an 80's style - perhaps targeting an older audience and perhaps fetishising youth.
- IRONY - Her image is always changing, different subcultures expressed, she is playing with the idea of image, which may be understood by a mature audience (unsure who she is?)
-  Taking the mick out of standard 'love songs' and is more bothered about her guitar than the male.
- Not in love with male character but with her guitar.
- Sells to older audience, one night stands.
- David Walliams & Simon Pegg (comedians, which maybe enhances the comedy aspect of what the video is trying to do)

Digipack Analysis

Arctic Monkeys Digipack Analysis
The album covers (front and back) are based on a video taken in the early hours of the morning in Korova bar, Liverpool after the band had given Chris Mclure, his cousin and his best friend "seventy quid to spend on a night out". The image caused some controversy when the head of Scotland's NHS criticised the cover for reinforcing the idea that smoking is okay. The band's product manager denied the accusation, and in fact suggested the opposite: "You can see from the image smoking is not doing him the world of good."

The inside cover is a photo of the inside of an ashtray, this ties in the with photos of Chris McClure smoking. This creates a synergy between the inside and outside cover.

The logo of the Arctic Monkeys is clearly seen in the top left-hand corner to help promote the band. The Arctic Monkeys tend to change their logo each time they bring out a album. This promoted their 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not' stage.
The inside cover also promotes Domino Records by using their logo so that people know that they are signed to that specific record label.

Website Analysis

After conducting some research into artists who have been very successful in 2013 and have developed over a number of years, I have decided to analyse Justin Timberlake and his brand new album "20/20". I chose this as it has proved successful in the charts and comes with a new image for former boyband member Justin Timberlake. Justin previously served in the boy band 'N sync who formed in 1995 and rose to fame in 1996 with Justin as one of the two lead singers. After the band broke up he decided to go solo and was a huge hit in 2002 with his new album Justified.
Through the transition from 'boyband' to solo artist, Timberlake has undergone a complete change of image and has promoted himself as a 'new' self.

This Album showed a big change in his appearance as you can see from the images of him in 'N sync in the middle to his new solo album where was known for being a rapper/singer. After this album Justin turned to acting and became very well known for many films he was in like 'Alpha Dog' and 'Friends with Benefits' and now is back into music with his new album 20/20.

In his new album cover, Justin Timberlake has used a futuristic look, perhaps to represent his new image and that he looks to go on in the future using the same image. The suit and tie image could be the visual to go along with the song 'Suit & Tie' which appears on the album. It also perhaps represents the transition from youth to adult hood during his career. He is now a mature and independent Justin Timberlake.
This is the front page of the justintimberlake.com website. It shows photo of a live performance, which highlights his ongoing success and perhaps engulfs the viewers into the 'Justin Timberlake experience'. There is also a video shown at the bottom of the page that is his latest single. The website is also connected to Twitter & other social networking sites. There are links shown to all social networking available, which is a way of creating synergy across all sites.

There is a simple and easy to use menu available for users to navigate between each page on the website.
The 'Tour' tab notifies the dates and venues that he is appearing at in his solo gigs, this enables him to earn money by letting his fans know where and when he is playing. This gives his fans the information to pay for a ticket to his gig and support his future career with that money.

The store tab also enables fans to promote Justin Timberlake; it also helps him to earn more money for his future career.

Analysing and observing existing websites, give me ideas of what to include in our own website for our unsigned band. You can determine the elements that appear on a home screen artist website, so that the website we create on Wix is accurate and fits the conventions of an artist website.

Target Audience Profile

Target Audience Profile
The target audience I have chosen for my music video is teenagers and young adults. I have chosen this because of the hyper-reality and surreality of the concept for my video. It may not comprehend with a younger audience. The lyrics of the song may also not be able to be interpreted by a younger audience and may need a more mature mind to understand the links between lyrics and visuals.
The target audience i have selected has also opened up the amount of people that may view my music video as the internet and technology is used primarily by the specified age group. Placing my final product on YouTube will reel in the desired target audience.
The music video is targeted at both the female and male audience as both are included in the video. The male gaze could be used in this video and they may find the dancer attractive, or good to watch as ballet is a lot about the female figure. Females may be able to relate to the video in that they are vulnerable and may need a man to help save them in reality, perhaps the business man in the video could represent their partner in real-life.

I also found that looking on Three Kings Down's Facebook page that they have a statistics page - out of the 161 people who have liked their page, they have found that the largest audience came from people aged:

Timeline

Completing this timeline has enabled me to accurately find the length of time I have to fill with the ideas given. It will help me decide how many shots I need to build up each section without any gaps.  The timeline has also helped me to plan out my idea in a more detailed and structured way. This should help when putting together my storyboard and anamatic.

Moodboard

This was my original note paper when forming ideas for my music video. It is very basic and has keywords associated with my idea which were brainstormed and expanded.

Reference & Inspiration: Music Videos

The idea for the music box coming to life has been taken from inspiration such as Jessie J's Price Tag & The Mighty Boosh sketch, Eels.Eels also represents the hyper-reality of my idea. Also Florence And The Machine - Spectrum

The idea for walking through a busy city could be taken from the video Another Chance by Roger Sanchez. In that video, she holds a large plastic heart which is the metaphorical representation of the love in her heart. The heart become smaller and smaller as she walks along the street. Relating this to my idea, the heart is replaced with despration, the male main character is desperate to become close to and save the ballerina in the music box. The shrinking of the heart is replaced with the distance between him and the ballerina and how close he is to saving her.

The idea for walking down the street also comes from The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony. He is represented as an individual, you can very much tell that he isn't integrated into the other pedestrians, the focus is on him.

When the ballerina in the idea for my video is at the beginning, i picture her dancing alone on a very plain background in a room on her own with either a white background or the superimposed image of the inside of a music box behind her. In Shinedown's video 'Second Chance' the girl dancing in her garage reminds me of what I had in mind.

Lyric Analysis

Three Kings Down - My Air

Bring in the week
Bring in the beaten
Thrown in a heap
And he will complete them

Bring in the broken
Bruised shattered and hoping
Compassionate evokes
This kind of devotion
All this subsides
And we have new eyes to
To see there's a surplus
Of things just to hurt us
Be led by the hand
Be led by the lamb
Dishevelled or worthless
There's always a purpose
For you
My Air
For you
My Air
For you
My Air

Bring in the week
Bring in the beaten
Thrown in a heap
And he will complete them

Bring in the broken
Bruised shattered and hoping
Compassionate evokes

Loneliness hides
In bottles and brides
In this deep despair
I feel you there
And I can't decide
Who's wrong or who's right
Still I declare
You're always my air

The lyrics were not the inspiration for the basic idea from the video, but the piece of music at the beginning where it sounds alot like a music box that a ballerina is usually placed in. This then inspired me to have the ballerina come to life. The lyrics incorporate here as it describes being 'broken' and 'shattered' - the ballerina has broken free almost and the male main character has helped her 'he will complete them'. The description of 'devotion' and the singer naming her as his own 'MY air' shows that his devotion towards the trapped girl is making him want to save her. It is also highlighted at the end when he goes from saying 'my air' to 'you're always my air' which sounds alot more permanent.

Email To Copyright Holder

I sent an email to the band 'Three Kings Down' Australia through Facebook, in order to ask for the permission to use their song in my A2 coursework. This would prevent copyright and the concept of 'stealing' music.
I received a reply just hours after my email giving me consent and offering any help that I may need from Three Kings Down
